I found this BBC News link on Randy Thomas’ blog about passport forms being updated in the UK to include options for same-sex parents. Parents applying for passports for their children may now identify themselves as “Mother”, “Father”, “Parent 1” , or “Parent 2”.
BBC News quoted Sam Dick, head of policy at gay rights group Stonewall saying:
“These changes simply reflect the realities of modern life for families – making it clearer for same-sex parents applying for passports for their children and more straightforward for the officials who process them.”
I can understand how this would make things run more smoothly at the passport office, but I wonder what these “realities of modern life for families” really mean for the kids? I remember not too long ago when we were being schooled on how to teach our children about why Sarah has two mommies and Jack has two daddies, and now stripping away the mom and dad titles, what are Sarah and Jack left with?
I know it seems like such a small and technical thing. It would be easy to brush off as something that could never really impact the children in these families, and yet, sometimes small things send big messages.
Are we raising a society of orphans?
